When did wireless application protocol become so sexy?

I was describing to my teenage offspring the other day the excitement that came over me and the people of my generation when we first encountered WAP websites. Never before had we been able to see such exhilarating detail on the screens of our phones.

This was the time of the Mk 1 dealerphone, the brick with the pullout aerial and the snazzy clamshell Motorola. We'd not long got used to being able to communicate with people while out and about, and now we were seeing people in all their glory in intimate detail on our little screens. There was no going back.

As I explained all this, I noticed their expressions becoming more and more horrified. They started muttering something about Cardi B, TMI and ew and realised they had something very important to do upstairs. So I still don't know why WAP now gets people all hot and bothered.
